Diary of a Headhunter

Do You Know What You Want?

by Michelle Grider

So many times while I’m making new connections with candidates within the technology consulting arena, I find the biggest challenge isn’t that I can’t find the specific technical experience I am looking for (whether it be in the areas of test management experience, application and web development, or project management), it’s that most people don’t know what they want.

As a recruiter for one of the best technology consulting companies in the Midwest, I take pride in dedicating time trying to get to know an individual both personally and professionally to evaluate career and culture fit.

I can learn a great deal about a candidate by understanding their past professional experiences and why those opportunities did or did not work out; and what they like or did not like about them.  Questions I ask frequently include:

  • What types of environments have they worked within, and which they preferred?
  • Do they want to work within a team environment?
  • Do they want to work within a consulting environment?
  • Is their nature to be a collaborator or does working more independently get the best out of them?

These are just some of the areas I explore, and have candidates consider.   My advice for anyone in the process of entertaining a job change is to first do a self-evaluation to truly understand…”Do you know what you want?“  Before you step in front of an interviewer, be sure to ask yourself similar questions to those I have listed above.  Discovering your own personal and professional motivators will point you to the right career path.  Only then can you truly be an active participant within your own interviewing process with a potential future employer.    Without first going through this self-evaluation, you might just end up in another environment that won’t suit your career path aspirations…or your personality!

I would love to speak to anyone entertaining a new career (after you’ve gone through this exercise of self-analysis, of course!).  So please contact us if you are ready to work for a dynamic, growing, people-focused technology consultancy.
